Saskatchewan Shorthorn Bulletin - October 2007

It is hard to believe that the end of another year is fast approaching.  Where does the time go!!

Harvest seems to be in various stages depending what part of the province you live in.  Too much rain in some areas, and not enough in others is affecting the final outcome.  Grain prices have bounded to an all time high, which in turn is causing a downward spiral in cattle prices.  Hopefully with the border opening we will not see the purebred industry affected as severely as might be the commercial market.

We are now on the heels of another Agribition, and by now exhibitors are getting their animals ready for the show and sale.

Agribition is an excellent venue to promote the Shorthorn breed, and a place to rekindle friendships both new and old.   I know I always look forward to seeing everyone to talk about the past year’s happenings in their part of the world.   See the Calendar page for a more detailed listing of Agribition events.

The Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association is continuing with their program in support of 4-H.  Those of you winning a champion at your club are entitled to a jacket, by simply sending me a photo, with a write-up on your win and your jacket size.   Winning a championship at a regional show entitles you to a $250 credit certificate for a grand champion and a $100 credit certificate for a reserve champion.

Our Lassie Queens for this year are Dayna Huber from Lipton (the daughter of Bill and Jan Huber), and Rayleen Moellenbeck (the daughter of Richard and Rhonda Moellenbeck).  The girls will serve as runners at the sale, hand out ribbons at the show, and simply add a touch of Saskatchewan color to the occasion.  Watch out for the girls as they debut new outfits for the first time at this Agribition.

For those of you who haven't heard, Barn Boss Cory Schaeffer, has decided to step down after serving the Shorthorn exhibitors at Agribition for ten years.  At their annual meeting in January, the Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association showed their appreciation to Cory for his years of service with the presentation of a Henry Ripplinger print.  In April at the Annual Agribition meeting Cory was elected to sit on the board.

This year at Agribition, Shorthorn exhibitors will see a new face in the barn boss position, that being Craig Boake from Melville, SK.   Craig with his wife, Donna, and children, Megan and Braden, raise Shorthorn and commercial cattle.  Craig is also a director on the Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association, and is the Shorthorn representative on the board of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association.  The barn boss position can be very demanding.  With cooperation and support from all exhibitors, Craig’s transitional year can be a positive one.

The photo contest will be running again this year.  Bring your special photos of Shorthorns in any circumstance to the Shorthorn booth at Agribition.  I will display them for everyone to vote on.

Do you have some old photos of peope or events gone by?  Bring them even if you don't know everything about them.   “Who are they and where are they now?” will be the headline.  Let’s have some fun with this.  Let’s get even more people to the booth talking Shorthorns.

The Fun Auction at the Shorthorn banquet always seems to be a crowd pleaser.  If anyone has some article they would like to donate to the auction, please let me know.  It can be anything from a craft to Shorthorn memorabilia, or just something that we can have some fun with.  Once again there will be two old herd books for those of you interested in them.

This year at Agribition is the Shorthorn National Show.  As a special feature of this National Show, the Saskatchewan directors are encouraging all Shorthorn exhibitors to participate in the ultrasound carcass evaluation available at the cost of $11.00 per animal.   The information collected can then be displayed for full exposure to the public showing the positive characteristics of Shorthorns.

The Saskatchewan Shorthorn Association is offering a chance at a prize draw of $200.00 for participating in the scanning.   Each animal scanned entitles you to an entry in the draw.  The more animals you scan the more chances you have of winning!  Drop by the booth for more information and get your entry for the draw.
